About Joseph Beller

I am a Criminal Defence lawyer at Savage Oykhman Law. Savage Oykhman Law is a full service criminal defence law office, with central offices across Western Canada and Toronto.

Practice Philosophy

My practice philosophy is to focus on the person behind the file number. In my practice, every client is provided a high level of personal focus, ensuring they are involved every step of the way.

For many people involved in the criminal justice system, the process is confusing and intimidating. My job is not only to help my clients navigate the system but understand it. I am always happy to explain the greater legal context of a charge, ensuring my clients understand the legal principles behind their case and why a certain strategy is best.

I open every file with a detailed intake and initial analysis of a case. As the file proceeds, my clients are kept in the loop with regular updates so they always know what is happening with their file and what their best possible outcome is in every situation.

I get to know my clients closely so I can understand who they are and what led them to me. Every client has a story; it’s my job to ensure it gets told.

Education, Accomplishments, and Career Path

I received my law degree from the University of Calgary. During my degree I worked as the managing editor of the school newspaper, served as VP Academic on student council, and was a founding executive of the Criminal Law Society club.

I also worked full-time with Student Legal Assistance, a pro bono legal clinic assisting low-income and marginalized people with a variety of legal matters. I gained a wealth of knowledge with the criminal justice system prior to graduating and obtained experience representing clients with a number of criminal matters. This has provided a level of familiarity with judges, courtroom procedures, and Crown prosecutors far beyond most lawyers of my call year.

With SLA, I also worked on non-criminal matters, gaining experience advocating in Judicial Dispute Resolution, Academic Misconduct Hearings, Residential Tenancy Dispute Resolution Service Hearings, and civil settlement negotiations. This has provided me with a well-rounded base of experience and advocacy strategies that I utilize with my criminal files.

During law school I received a number of accolades for a high academic standing, particularly in the area of criminal law, and was a nationally ranked oralist in the Justice Bora Laskin Constitutional Law Moot.

I am a current member of the Alberta Criminal Defence Lawyers Association (CDLA) which provides access to a wellspring of useful information, keeping me apprised of new cases, available defences, and important changes in the law. One of my mentors, Ian Savage, is the long-time president of the CDLA, creating an even larger wealth of resources at my disposal.

I continue to be actively involved with the University of Calgary Faculty of Law and regularly teach seminars to law students on different aspects of criminal law and practice. I frequently volunteer as an advising lawyer with Student Legal Assistance and as a judge for a number of student Moot competitions.

I have been practicing law at Strategic Criminal Defence since 2020, working on thousands of files and helping countless clients in that time. I have experience at all levels of Court and have been successful at the Court of Justice, the Alberta Court of King’s Bench, and the Alberta Court of Appeal. Whether it is a trial to prove your innocence or a contested disposition to obtain the best sentence possible, I will advocate tirelessly on your behalf for a fair and just result.

Client Reviews

Fantastic defence team! Mateya Selders was puntual at every instance. She skillfully guided me through my case from its dreadful start to successful finish. Combined with her legal know-how, experienced team, and exceptional service; she has made an otherwise tragic turn of events into a memorable hinderence.

5 stars can’t even come close to convey my gratitude. Thank you Mateya and the Strategic Criminal Defence team!

I can’t thank enough to Joseph Beller. I got into a funny situation charged by CPS. This is a horrible place to be in, anyone who needs help should reach out ASAP.

He was very professional, calm, made the case go very smooth, good communication, answered my questions. Reliable! He cares about his clients, I trusted him 100%.

Charges have been withdrawn within a few months. 100% recommend him and his team to anyone in need! I wish more lawyers would be like him!

Had my first criminal offence and unfortunately ended up with assault charges after drinking too much. Greg took the time to review the evidence and noted that there was actually no assault on one of the allegations! He was so patient with me and dealt with my fear and anxiety amazingly, answering my million questions all hours of the day. It took forever, due to delay from prosecution, but I ended up with a resolution of a peace bond that was acceptable while also allowing me to deal with the consequences of my actions. I hope to never be in a position to see Greg again, however, I highly recommend him and his team for these tough situations!

I recently found myself assisting my elderly father with an urgent legal situation while from out of province. Attorney Greg Janzen went above and beyond from A-Z. He walked us through every step seamlessly. Resulting in a better than expected outcome. You can count on Greg Janzen!
