What happens once I retain a lawyer?

Once you retain a lawyer, your lawyer will take over the conduct of your case. This means that your lawyer will order and review disclosure on your behalf, attend your court appearances on your behalf, and speak with the Crown Prosecutor in the hopes of obtaining the best possible resolution for your case. Being charged with a criminal offence and maneuvering the Court system is extremely stressful and overwhelming. When you retain a lawyer, your lawyer will maneuver through this system on your behalf, and shoulder much of the anxiety and strain associated with a criminal prosecution. It is important to ensure your lawyer has your up to date contact information so that they are able to update you on the status of your case, and obtain instructions on how to proceed as necessary.
