What should I prepare for my first meeting with a lawyer?

In order to have a productive first meeting with your lawyer, there are some preliminary steps that you can take. You should ensure that you bring all documents given to you by the police or the Court to review with your lawyer at your first meeting. It is also extremely helpful for you to write a detailed summary of the events relating to your charges. Your memory will fade over time, and the sooner you can write a comprehensive account of the incident, the better able you will be to preserve your memory of the alleged offence. If witnesses were present at the time of the offence, it will also be useful to have them write statements of what transpired if they are willing to do so. If you sustained any injuries as a result of the incident, or if there is any damage to your property, it will also be useful for you to take photographs to preserve this evidence as it may be useful to your defence.
